Return to Slim Jim All Pro Series

Howard Makes it Two in a Row

Madison, Ill. - May 28, 1999 - It wasn't just another night race for the
drivers in the Slim Jim All Pro Series, NASCAR Touring.  Friday night's
$59,150 Slim Jim 40, which was the first ever race run under the lights at
Gateway International Raceway, represented the first superspeedway night
race for the late model warriors.  Greer, S.C.'s Steven Howard grabbed his
second win in as many starts as he etched his name in the Gateway record books.

"This was a great track for our cars to run on, it was so smooth it was
just like runnin' on the interstate," commented the 25-year-old Howard.  "I
was able to get under Scott (Kilby) after his car pushed up the track in the
corner and with us a running a new motor my Dick Brooks Chevrolet/Greer
Flooring Center Monte Carlo was strong," he added.

Since it was a night of firsts it was only appropriate that Howard earned
his first career Bud Pole Award.  He circled the 1.250 mile oval in a time
of 34.011 seconds at an average speed of 132.310 mph to establish the
initial track record for Slim Jim All Pro Series cars.  Statesville, N.C.'s
Scott Kilby grabbed the outside front row starting position with a lap time
of 34.079 seconds.  Kilby was attempting to secure his third pole award in
as many races.  Qualifying was not without incident as two-time former
series champion Mike Cope crashed hard into the turn one wall when his
throttle stuck.  Cope was uninjured but his race car sustained heavy damage
to the right front and side of the car.

Kilby motored his Arndt & Herman Windows Chevrolet into the lead at the
start of the 40 lap sprint with Howard, Wayne Anderson and Ronnie Burkett
taking chase.  On the second lap David Bonnett and Chad Bland spun, bringing
out the race's first caution.  Bland's Jasper Engines & Transmissions
Chevrolet sustained race-ending damage after making contact with the
retaining wall while Bonnett was able to right his Dunlop Golf-sponsored
machine and restarted at the rear of the field, still on the lead lap.

Green flag racing resumed on lap seven with Kilby continuing to set the
pace.  Howard slowly began to reel in the leader, occasionally diving low
down the straights but unable to mount a successful pass until lap 19.  The
lead change couldn't have come soon enough for Howard as he was scored
as the race leader on lap 20, picking up the $400 Gatorade Front Runner
Award for leading at the race's halfway point.

Throughout the balance of the race only one additional caution flag was
displayed and Howard was never seriously challenged and went on to win by a
margin of 1.967 seconds.  Burkett drove his Big Daddy's BBQ Sauces &
Spices/Havana Cola Chevrolet to his second consecutive second place finish
with Kilby settling for third place honors.  Anderson and points leader Hal
Goodson rounded out the top five.  Conrad Burr, Patrick Lawler, Jeff Fultz,
Billy Bigley, Jr. and David Reutimann completed the top 10.

The initial race record time was established at 29 minutes, 24 seconds and
Howard covered the 50 mile distance at an average speed of 102.041 mph.  The
two caution periods ate up eight laps and there were two lead changes among
two drivers.  Twenty of 27 starters were running when the checkered flag
waved and 18 drivers completed all 40 laps.

The points race grew tighter with leader Goodson now leading Anderson by
just 15 points, with Burkett displacing Bigley for the third spot.  Burkett
trails Anderson by 10 points while Bigley is 24 behind Burkett.  Howard is
exactly 100 points behind leader Goodson.

After registering a career-best seventh place finish rookie Patrick Lawler
earned Rookie-of-the-Race honors.  The Colleyville, Tex. driver jumped into
a tie for the fourth position in the Rookie points chase, which is still
headed by Coy Gibbs who leads Rodney Childers by 11 points.  For the second
week in a row Danny Howard picked up the $300 check from Jasper Engines &
Transmissions after capturing Crew-Chief-of-the-Race honors for the second
race in a row.  Howard is now squarely in the fray for the annual Crew Chief
Challenge contest as he trails leader Jimmy King, Goodson's head wrench, by
10 points.

Motor Speedway for the running of the zMAX 100 on Saturday night, June 5.
